How to Keep Your Pool Clean in the Summer

During the summer, there’s nothing better than taking advantage of the warm weather and throwing a pool party with your family and friends. Whether you’re planning a Fourth of July cookout, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking to beat the heat, all of the fun can result in a considerable amount of mess to deal with once your guests head home.

To help get your pool back in pristine condition, the team at Miller Pools has written this guide on how to keep your pool clean in summer.

Clean any clutter

No matter how considerate your guests are, it’s inevitable that your backyard will need a tidy-up after any pool party. Before you tackle the actual pool itself, you should deal with any mess in the surrounding area.

Pick up any bottles, plates, napkins, or any trash and dispose of it to ensure you can move freely without tripping over anything. Pay particular attention to any food waste left behind – the last thing you want is to encourage pests around your pool area. You should also remove any pool floats or equipment and give them a quick rinse down before storing them. This prevents the chlorine and chemicals from damaging the material.

Scrub the deck

After an event or gathering, your pool deck can be particularly sticky or slippery, especially if drinks have been flowing. To prevent any accidents, you should clean this area as quickly as possible. Dilute a suitable cleaning solution in some water and then pour this onto the deck, using a stiff-bristled pool brush to scrub at any stubborn stains. Then, hose away any soap suds, taking care to direct this spray away from your pool water and into drains. If your deck is especially grimy, it’s a good idea to use a pressure washer if you have one.

Skim your pool

When lots of people use your pool, it’s only natural that debris might end up in the water, whether that’s sunscreen residue, hair ties, or dirt from guests’ feet. If left ignored, this can end up getting sucked into your pool filters, so you should use a skimmer net to pick out any floating bits of debris and remove them before they cause a blockage.

Run the pump

Once you’ve removed all visible debris from your pool, you should then allow the filter to run continuously for between 12 and 24 hours. This allows the water to circulate and ensures that any contaminants or impurities are removed and your pool is safe to swim in again. After this step, you should also inspect and empty the skimmer baskets to prevent debris from building up.

Test the water

Ensuring your pool water is correctly balanced can be a delicate science, and heavy use of your pool in summer can seriously disrupt your pool chemistry, thanks to the amount of sunscreen, personal care products, sweat, and other organic contaminants washed into the water.

You can use test strips to get a rough idea of the pH and chlorine levels, but for an in-depth picture of your pool chemistry, you should contact a trusted pool professional like Miller Pools for help. We can test a sample of your pool water and identify just what chemicals need to be added to restore it to the correct balance. You should never attempt to do this yourself if you’re unsure, as using the wrong chemicals can create an unsafe swimming environment.
